There are many variations in fillings (meat or vegetarian) and preparations, though the buns are most often steamed. They are a variation of mantou from Northern China. Chinese steamed buns can be stuffed with various types of fillings or unstuffed. Those stuffed steamed buns are called as Baozi in Chinese (Bao Buns) and those without fillings are called as mantou.

Instructions to make Steamed Buns:
  1. Prepare all your ingredients. Knead a soft firm dough and let it rest for 3 hours.
  2. Squeeze out all excess water from the mince before adding any spice. Marinate the mince with all the listed ingredients and keep aside. Take out the dough after 3 hours, knead it again into a round ball.
  3. Portion the dough into 14 small balls. Keep it cover with a samp cloth to prevent it from drying out. Take each ball and roll out to the size of your palm as shown. Fill in the center with the filling and shape it as shown in the link provided https://www.youtube.com/watch?bhi=ttkOAVfVSi8
  4. On the steamer plate, lay out cupcake liners and place the buns on top of each. Steam them for about 30 minutes and serve with soy and chilli oil (Recipe provided earlier)

Mantou(馒头) is a basic staple in northern part of China and served in every places of China not just the northern part. Poke dough down to deflate and transfer to a lightly floured surface. Cut dough in half and roll each half into a long tube. Traditional Chinese steamed buns are round in shape with an enclosed filling, either with char siu pork or a traditional ground pork mixture with slices of Chinese lap cheong sausage and boiled egg.
