Though it is Egypt's national dish, it isn't actually Egyptian in origin. Neither rice nor macaroni are indigenous to Egypt. It is believed that Koshari originated in India and dates back to the time of British Colonization.

Steps to make Egyptian Rice:
  1. Step 1: turn your stove onto medium high heat. After your rice is rinsed set aside. Drizzle the oil into the bottom of the pot and pour in the pasta and brown. Watch the pasta, mixing and browning it thoroughly.
  2. Add the rice and mix thoroughly for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the water. I usually add about two cups extra over the rice, enough the cover the top or just over. Add the salt and butter, about 3 Tbsp. Stir and let boil. Once the rice has doubled in sized and there is no more water in the pot, cover and let stand for half and hour.
  4. The rice should resemble the look in the picture.

The name "Koshari" is actually from the Hindu "khichri", which refers to a dish of lentils and rice. Koshari is a traditional Egyptian staple, mixing chick peas, pasta, fried onions, and zesty tomato sauce, served on top a bed of rice and brown lentils! Flavor packed and not to mention healthy! The second most popular variety is Egyptian rice, which is similar to a short-grain Spanish variety, like Arborio or Baldo. Chopped pistachios, to garnish Egyptian rice is the best!
