Here I have used skinned beans where the thin translucent cover from the beans are removed. This is done by lightly pressing and squeezing the beans. Avarekalu or hyacinth beans are widely available during winter seasons. These beans give an extra taste and flavor to the upma making it more delicious.
Instructions to make Awarekalu upma (butter beans):
- Roast semolina by adding 1 tablespoon ghee. Keep it aside. Pressure cook butter beans for 1 whistle and keep it for later use.
- Heat oil in a pan add mustard and jeera. After mustard start popping add chana daal, urad daal and green chilli
- Add curry leaves, ginger garlic paste and onion
- After onions turn golden brown colour add little salt and turmeric and saute. Add butter beans and saute for 2-3 mins
- Add 2 cups of water and bring it to boil.
- Start adding semolina slowly and keep stirring, reducing flame to low and add coconut and coriander leaves cover with lid.
- Switch off the flame and keep closed for 5mins. Serve hot.
It is very simple to prepare and follow the regular upma recipe. Only addition will be cooked Avarekalu. You can add them alone or mix them with other vegetables too. Akki tari uppittu is a traditional breakfast dish of Karnataka, made with broken raw rice/coarsely powdered rice, Avarekalu or Field Beans is quite common during winter season in south India, adding these flat beans add a unique earthy flavour to the dish.
