The ingredients needed to make Braised Beef:
  1. Take 800 g skirt of beef or braising steak
  2. Make ready 50 g plain flour
  3. Get 8 shallots, peeled
  4. Make ready 1 clove garlic, chooped
  5. Make ready 1 tbsp sherry vinegar
  6. Get 200 ml red wine
  7. Take 1 bay leaf
  8. Take 2 star anise
  9. Take 1/2 litre beef stock
  10. Get 1 tbsp tomato puree
  11. Prepare 4 large mushrooms
  12. Take 200 g carrots
  13. Take 1 kg potatoes
  14. Get 25 g butter
  15. Get 50 ml milk
Steps to make Braised Beef:
  1. Preheat oven to 150C/300F
  2. Put flour in shallow dish with salt and pepper. Dredge the meat with the flour
  3. Heat the oil and fry steak until brown on all sides
  4. Remove the meat and put into casserole dish
  5. Add shallots and garlic to the pan and cook for 2 mins. Add sherry vinegar and wine and boil until volume reduced by half, then pour over the meat
  6. Add bay leaf and anise then boiling stock and tomato puree
  7. Braise in the oven 2-3 hours. Make sure stock covers the meat every so often
  8. Put the potatoes on to boil half an hour before the end. Add mushrooms and carrots to the steak at this point
  9. Mash the potatoes once cooked with milk, butter and seasoning. Serve
