I followed the recipe for everything except the green peas coz I do not have them on hand. I use a bigger onion instead. I forgot to dot extra butter on top but it still came out crisp with adequately brown. There are many variations of the recipe, but the defining ingredients include minced or ground beef with onions (and sometimes other vegetables) in.

Steps to make Cottage Pie:
  1. Brown onions, carrots and celery in a large pan.
  2. Add mince and continue cooking until brown.
  3. Add tomato puree, worcestershire sauce, mixed herbs and flour, stir together and add beef stock and mushrooms.
  4. Continue cooking with a lid on for 30 mins on a low heat.
  5. In a separate pan bring potatoes to the boil in salted water and cook until tender.
  6. Transfer meat mixture to a large pie dish.
  7. Mash potatoes with plenty of butter and a little milk.
  8. Spread mash on top of meat evenly and fluff with a fork.
  9. Place pie under a pre-heated grill until golden brown.

Cottage pie is a meat pie that is topped with mashed potatoes and baked in the oven. Now, cottage pie and shepherd's pie differ only in the type of ground meat they are made with.
